Now that the holiday season is among us and Christmas is fast approaching, there will be those who will try and take advantage of the season, to take money through fraudulent means from our citizens.
Sutter County Sheriff’s Office have received some complaints about two specific telephone scams that are ongoing in our community. Both are scams that have occurred in our area before.
The first telephone scam is a person representing themselves as being from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The scammer will provide the victim with a telephone number to call in regards to action being taken against them. Once the scammer can get the victim to call, they will be asked for confidential information to either steal the victim’s identity or to get the victim to wire money to prevent legal action from occurring.
The second telephone scam targets the elderly who may have grandchildren. The caller will say they are their grandson or granddaughter of who is in custody and are needing bail money to get them out of jail. The scammer will then try to get the victim to wire them the money.
Please be aware and ask the caller questions. If you have any doubts or questions, please do not hesitate to call the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 530-822-7307.
