Chico Police Join County Agencies Offering CodeRED Emergency Notification System — Web-Based Critical Information Alerts —

Chico, CA – The Chico Police Department announces the launch of the CodeRED emergency mass notification system to advise residents in the event of emergency situations, joining several Butte County emergency agencies now part of the web-based information-delivery system.

The CodeRED system will be launched and tested Thursday, December 14th, 2017 at 1:00PM. The test phase is to validate telephone numbers in the city’s database. During the test phase, individuals will receive a call, email or text message to validate telephone numbers. The Caller ID number will read 866.419.5000 for emergencies and a caller ID number will read 855.969.4636 for non-emergencies. The message will say, “This is a TEST of Chico’s CodeRED Emergency Notification system. Please visit to register further contact information. Thank you”

There is no need for action if you receive the call, email or text message. Emergency personnel are merely testing the CodeRED system to ensure it is operational.  If you would like to register additional contact numbers to the CodeRED system, please visit

The CodeRED system serves as the backbone for both the City of Chico and Butte County regions for communicating swiftly and efficiently with staff and citizens in times of emergency. The system sends telephone calls, text messages, emails and posts to social media channels, informing residents of emergency situations and the appropriate steps to take to protect life and property. The CodeRED system will be the primary notification system for residents for emergencies including, but not limited to active shooter incidents, fires, floods, earthquakes, evacuations, drinking water emergencies and missing children notices.

“Communication with our community is always a top priority for the Chico Police Department, especially during critical incidents,” said Police Chief Michael O’Brien. “Code Red will allow us to provide more efficient and effective information to our residents when they need it most. This is an important tool that will better serve our community during those times of crisis.”

The Chico Police Department’s emergency dispatch unit has spent the past several weeks in preparation for the launch of CodeRED; learning the advance features of the system, updating current data base information and training additional staff members in CodeRED usage.

CodeRED is a system which will also allow the Chico Fire Department to provide an enhanced level of emergency communications for residents. When response times and alerting the public to situations which could be life-threatening are critical, CodeRED will play a vital role for emergency first responders.

“It is imperative Chico Fire-Rescue have the ability to communicate critical information of incidents that affect our community in a timely manner. Incidents could range from an Active Shooter/Hostile Environment, Hazardous Materials Incidents or a Wildland Urban Fire; all of which require efficiently notifying the public to ensure safety,” explained Chico Fire Department Interim Chief, Aaron Lowe. “Our department is confident the CodeRED Emergency Alert System will further enhance the emergency services already provided to the community.”

All residents within the Chico City limits are encouraged to visit and click on the CodeRED logo to enroll their contact information, including cell phone numbers, text and email addresses. No one should assume they are in the existing emergency contact data base. Residents may also stay up-to-date on emergency information by using the CodeRED Mobile Alert App. The free download is available on the App store and Google Play. It will allow residents and visitors to receive free emergency information and community alerts directly to their iPhone and Android devices.

“The City of Chico continues to look for opportunities to enhance communications with our residents,” said Chico City Manager Mark Orme. “CodeRED is a fine example of those efforts and another important step in further enabling citizen connectivity to local government, ensuring vital information is readily shared.”
