Chico Police Partner with area agencies for theft enforcement operation including using 2 theft stings: a “bait” package and “bait” car

During an operation period of 12-21-17 at 0800 hours through 12-22-17 at 0430 hours, the Chico Police Department partnered with the CSU Chico Police Department, Butte County Probation, Butte County Sheriff’s Department, and the Butte County District Attorney’s Office for a proactive theft enforcement detail.  The detail focused on those who are currently on probation for theft and burglary related crimes and proactive contacts with suspected criminals on the streets.  Also, two theft sting operations were conducted with the use of a “bait car” in the City of Chico parking structure next to the Hotel Diamond and a “bait package” at a residence in an area with high package thefts.  The following is a breakdown of charges within the 11 arrests made during the operational period:

6-Possession of Methamphetamine

3-Felony Warrants

2-Possession of Burglary Tools

1-Misdemeanor Warrant

1-Resisting Arrest

1-Possession of Stolen Property

1-Prowling/Vehicle Tampering case filed with District Attorney

1-Misappropriation of Found Property

This operation was in direct response to the on-going high numbers of theft and burglaries the City of Chico is experiencing in recent months.  Chico Police Chief Michael O’Brien stated, “I want to thank all those who participated in the operation, especially our allied agencies, as this type of effort is critically important to the citizens of Chico.  We will continue these types of operations throughout the coming year, to better protect our community.”

The Chico Police Department would like to remind the community to take every necessary precaution to prevent themselves from becoming victims of theft and burglaries by considering the following:

-Never leave items in a vehicle and always keep your vehicle locked

-Park your vehicles in a well-lit area at night and in a highly visible area

-Lock all doors and windows to your residence and close blinds when not home

-Let a trustworthy neighbor know when you are not home

-Keep the garage door closed unless you are in the garage

-Turn on bright lighting around your residence/business and keep bushes trimmed away from the house

-Form a Neighborhood Watch program and use the NextDoor application to know your neighbors

-Become involved in the Chico Police mobile applications for registering personal property

-Do not post information about your whereabouts or recent purchases on social media

-Ensure all valuable items are taken in at night and not left outside

The Chico Police Department is committed to ensuring our community is a safe place to live, work, and recreate within!
