Wrong Way Driver on Hwy 70 Detained by CHP and Booked into the Butte County Jail for Felony Child Endangerment, DUI (Drug), and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

On 04/16/2109, at approximately 0213 hours, CHP- Oroville received a call of a wrong way driver traveling southbound on SR-70 approaching Cox Lane in the northbound lanes. The weather at the time of this call was rainy, with wet roadways, during hours of darkness. The reporting party remained behind the suspect vehicle until CHP observed the vehicle southbound on SR-70 approaching Middle Honcut. The suspect vehicle was driving without headlights at an approximate speed of 45 miles per hour, on the right shoulder. CHP initiated an enforcement stop and contacted the driver. The driver was identified as Douglas Anthony Pope 08/01/1986.

CHP conducted a DUI evaluation and determined Pope was driving under the influence of a drug (CNS stimulant) and placed him under arrest for 23152(f)VC. The driver had his three-year-old child seated (unsecured) in the right rear passenger seat. Pope was booked into the Butte County Jail for Felony Child Endangerment, DUI (Drug), and Possession of a controlled substance. Butte County Children’s Services were notified of this incident.
